The history of the Maremma and the creation of the Parco della Maremma

The Maremma is a region rich in history and tradition that stretches along the Tuscan coast. Once a swampy area plagued by malaria, the Maremma was rehabilitated and transformed into fertile land in the 19th century under the rule of the Habsburgs. However, the original nature of this region was largely preserved, which eventually led to the creation of the Parco della Maremma.

Established in 1975, the Parco della Maremma, also known as the Uccellina Park, is a protected area of great ecological importance. With its dense forests, wild beaches and impressive biodiversity, the park is a paradise for nature lovers. Visitors can observe a wide variety of animal species, including wild boars, deer and numerous bird species.

The Maremma horses and the tradition of the Butteri

Another special feature of the Maremma is the Maremma horse breed. These robust and hardy animals are perfectly adapted to the region's rugged terrain and play a central role in local culture. The horses are traditionally bred and used by the Butteri, the mounted shepherds of the Maremma. The Butteri have been the guardians of the cattle herds for centuries and their work requires a high level of skill and courage.

Considered the Tuscan equivalent of the American cowboys, the Butteri are deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Maremma. Their traditions and knowledge have been passed down from generation to generation and are still alive today.
